Stone Temple Nirvana?

So if you haven’t heard yet, Stone Temple Pilots are back with a brand new single called Between the Lines. Local radio station 106.7 KROQ started playing the song recently and after hearing it for the first time I found a distinct similarity between it and Nirvana’s “Stay Away”.
Any die hard Nirvana fans that have heard the song probably picked up on the similarities as quickly as I did. When Between the Lines reaches the bridge it goes into a sequence that is very reminiscent of the verses to Nirvana’s “Stay Away”. Below are clips from the new Stone Temple Pilots song Between the Lines and a clip from Nirvana’s “Stay Away”. What do you think? Strong similarity or blatant ripoff?

Yeah, it sounds A LOT like Nirvana’s “Stay Away.”
And how many times has Nirvana blatantly ripped-off So MANY other bands??? Shall I go down the list?
Mind you, I love Nirvana : ) A LOT.
It is indeed a blatant similar rip-off of Nirvana’s song, “Stay Away.” Just as Nirvana’s song “Come as you are” has a strong similarity or/or blatant rip-off of Killing Joke’s “Eighties,” or “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a blatant rip-off/strong similarity to Boston’s “More than feeling” and/or “U-mass” by the Pixies, and I’ll stop right there . . .
I’m with you man. When I first heard this on the radio I immediately found that bridge to be a ripoff of Stay Away. I did a Google search for just this very thing to see if anyone else felt the same. I’m glad im not alone here. The true bummer is that I happen to like STP a lot and if you look up popular opinions of STP in the 90′s people often said STP were sortof ripsoffs of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Maybe they were. Maybe STP has always been a group of guys who could easily understand different musical trends and know how to imitate and market themselves to it. Makes you wonder; Is this song really any different than their older stuff?
P.S. Being a fan of both Nirvana and the Pixies, I will say that although it has been put on record that Smells Like Teen Spirit is Cobain’s imitation of the Pixies style of music, I feel while Cobain made a catchy and equally staple song of the 90′s, he pretty much failed with his interpretation of the Pixies. Quite frankly they sound nothing alike.
Where as this instance with STP sounds exactly like Stay Away.
I’m with you guys. I stumbled across this post after using the search string “between the lines stp nirvana”. I thought I’d find a wikipedia entry or something from the band indicating that they wanted to give a nod to “Stay Away”.
Still love both bands tho.
I am tired of guys saying that STP rip off other bands. They are all great musicians and are influenced by the same bands we all are. They sound like everything from nirvana, to metalica, to Alice in Chains, to Redd Kross, to Charles Mingus, to pearl jam, to Coltrane, to lynyrd skynyrd, and on and on but always put their twist on it. Name one of their contemporaries that has as diverse and far reaching variety of style in their catalogs? STP are the modern day Led Zeppelin.
Rich, no disrespect was intended on this post. I was simply sharing the similarities to see if anyone else out there felt the same way. Clearly a lot of people do. I grew up with bands like STP and Nirvana and am still til this day a huge fan of both. All bands are influenced by others, back when I was in a band I took styling queues from bands like Nirvana, The Nixons, and other Alt Rock/Grunge acts. Thanks for reading man!
To the Bryan kid who spammed the shit out of my blog with stuff about your band it’s a shame you acted like such an ass on the blog because I went to check out your band and you guys actually have a pretty decent sound. Maybe next time you should give the blog writer enough time to check into your comment and your music before commenting over and over and over and then lashing out on another commenter. K thanks
yea i only got mad cause he called me a deush bag i never said anything bad to him.But thnx alot for saying we sound good i really appreciate it =)
What I found amusing is that ‘spamboy’ spelled his own name wrong & had to repost with the correct spelling
Ok i listened to the song i dont think he knew but it does sound similar but hey its a great song
From their page on Wikipedia:
“The band was widely accused of imitating bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Nirvana in an attempt to cash in on the scene’s burgeoning popularity.”
I always felt that while they could be lumped in with those bands the main reason they sounded similar was because they had the same influences when they were growing up as musicians. The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, etc.
I think this most recent case however is a little too close to be explained away by having similar influences.
When I first heard this song I was immediately reminded of Nirvana’s “Stay Away”. As we know Scott is a big Nirvana fan illustrated most recently by his live covers of Nirvana tracks while he was performing with Velvet Revolver. Scott handles the vocal arrangements for STP (mostly in private) and you’d have to think that if we all caught on so quickly he had to have known what he was doing. Even on the remote chance that he didn’t recognize that he was mimicking a Nirvana song so closely it was probably a case of the melody sneaking through in his subconsciousness. I’d say he knew exactly what he was doing and his intent was in no way to rip anyone off but felt that that vocal pitch and styling was natural and fit the song well.
I’m a bit foggy on this but I seem to remember people saying STP’s “Art School Girl” was a rip off of Tripping Daisy’s “I Got A Girl”. MTV interviewed the Tripping Daisy band members and they were like “hey, we don’t think they ripped us off but even if they did that’s fuckin cool because they’re a great band!”

[...] Lines”, which will probably be locked away in the ClearChannel vault, is heavy yet polished, with the bridge lifted from Nirvana’s song “Stay Away” Hopefully they will continue to release records and not break up with another Shangri-La Dee Da [...]
I don’t think people are getting it. There is no ripping off of someone elses music. STP are more than capable of writing their own shit. It was meant to be a “tribute” to Nirvana. It is obvious and blatent when you hear it.
I definitely noticed it as well — but I’m inclined to think, as others have, that its more of a tribute than a rip-off.
The first song it made me think of, though, was “Rock and Roll Professionals” by Local H. Dean DeLeo did appear on a Local H track back in the late ’90′d.
I agree. The bridge is just a carbon copy of stay away, especially when you hear the back up vocals. However, I think it is far too blatant to be considered a “rip off”, because there is no way the band could have thought no one would notice. I see it as more of paying homage to one of their influences.
I agree with Yeti Bash and Sean on this. Scott must have arranged the lyrics with the intent of tribute toward Nirvana. I wonder if it is mentioned in the CD art work like with the lyrics to the song.
Definitely sounds exactly like Stay Away. But before the bridge even started the first time I heard the song, I was already thinking the chorus sounded like a rip off of Drain You. The I saw like “No way! Now the bridge is Stay Away!?”
